Tick, tick...boom?

As of today, a third member of our already small Sales & Marketing team has resigned.  As a summer student (aka intern), that means myself and my co-intern will have to pick up some of the slack…and deal with the appearent stress bomb that is bubbling under the surface of my already very busy boss.

Looks like July and August will be barrels of fun!

Looks like I will also be drinking alot more coffee…(possible?)

Today I have been listening to The Beatles all day long.
Came across this photo of John Lennon. I love it.
I hope one day to have a little extra cash to buy some big prints of Beatles pictures like this one to decorate my home with.
When I was in Washington, D.C. a few years ago at the Smithsonian, there was a whole exhibit of CBS archived photos of The Beatles, some of which were on sale at the gift shop. I wished so desperately that I had the money then to buy one, but I was only 15 and had maybe $50 USD, which didn’t even come close.

STRIKE!

The City of Toronto workers went on strike yesterday.  This includes garbage workers, daycare centres, public swimming pools and day camps.  A grand total of approx. 30,000 workers.

And to top it all off, the LCBO might be going on strike.

So, to summarize: In the middle of a recession, all of these unionized workers are on strike at the beginning of the hot summer weather, right before Canada Day and Pride Week. And, nobody will be able to buy liquor.

It will be filthy, smelly, frantic, and apparently DRY couple of weeks.

Bravo, Toronto. You have really stuck it to the man this time!

Please see the torture that was the Garbage strike of 2002.

Great.

Now I’ll have to start watching Glee in the fall based primarily on the fact that the cast has excellent acapella/harmonizing skills.

Tiny acts of generousity

This morning on the bus, there was a gentleman whom I can only assume to be homeless. He was sitting there and everyone was eyeballing him like he was a vicious animal about to attack at any moment. But he quietly sat there with all his bags.

Half way along, the bus driver leaned back and asked him what stop he wanted.  The homeless man told him. When he spoke, everyone looked at him even more perturbed, as he had some kind of speech imediment.

As we approached the stop that the homeless man requested, everyone watched as he got off the bus.  Since we were at a red light, the driver was looking at him as we walked by.  He opened the front doors and beeped his horn to grab his attention, then pulled a new bottle of water out from his jacket pocket and gave it to the homeless man, who inspected it graciously.

It’s little things like that that make me smile.  The bus driver didn’t have to do that, but he clearly he knew that he didn’t need that water as much as the homeless man did. And that makes me think he also let him on for free.

It’s not a very big gesture, but it symbolizes the bus driver’s recognition that this man is a human being too who deserves to shown a little bit of friendliness.

I don’t think much about the homeless, as awful as that sounds; in a city as big as Toronto, they just become part of the environment.  But today I saw one human being reaching out to another human being in the most subtle way and it touched my heart.
